Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Dawn Crafton Dance Connection has served generations of families in the Washington Metropolitan area for more than 60 years.
What is your primary product or service?
We teach dance in all its’ forms and offer something for all ages, levels and abilities, whether it's Recreational or Intensive. Our goal is to develop a well-rounded dancer and person - mind, body and soul. Discipline, dedication, responsibility and respect for self and others are developed as DCDC dancers become beautifully trained athletes through stretch, strength building, conditioning and strong technique. Grace, self-confidence, pure joy and fun with your dance family of friends are all part of that, but more importantly, we teach life lessons that will stay with your child no matter where their passion and dreams may take them.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Actually, 6 generations of my family have been dancers. I grew up in this business, as did my children and now my granddaughters. While, most of my career has been devoted to teaching locally, I traveled for many years teaching Master Classes and judging competitions coast to coast, nationally and internationally and have been on the faculty of every major dance organization in the US. My daughter, Kelly, who is now DCDC's Artistic Director, danced professionally all over the world including Tokyo, Monte Carlo and Broadway and is also in demand for Master Classes and judging competitions.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We are consistently ranked as one of the top dance studios in Maryland. I don't like to toot my own horn but, Tremaine Dance Competitions and Conventions just selected me as National Teacher of the Year "for Dedication to the Art of Dance Education"! This year one of our students won the coveted Teen Male Dancer of the Year and DCDC has been selected "Best of Gaithersburg" for years. We use a Team Approach to teaching. Our faculty works together to provide the best placement for every single child. We respect the fact that all children are unique, progress and mature differently. We guide our students appropriately, to improve not only their dance technique, but their personal development, character, self esteem, responsibility and life skills they take with them through the rest of their lives.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have one location, in Gaithersburg, MD and choose to focus all our energy there!
Provide detailed directions to your location
We are conviently located in the Airpark area of Gaithersburg, at the corner of Woodfield Road and Airpark Rd, which is an extension of Shady Grove Road. Close to 270 and 370.
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept Cash, Checks, MasterCard, Visa and offer a variety of payment plans and options. We also work with a Non Profit Organization, Dance Partners, Inc, to offer FREE classes for DHOH...Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Special Needs children.
Which areas do you service?
Most of our students live in Montgomery County, but we do attract students from DC, Virgina, Frederick and beyond.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
I am the Founder/Director and my daughter, Kelly Crafton Welch is the Artistic Director. Erin Kelly is DCDC's Studio Manager. Erin grew up dancing with us and her Mom danced with us, too. She is a vital part of the team and onsite to provide friendly customer service.
What are your hours of operation?
DCDC hours vary depending on the time of year. Please visit us at www.dcdcDance.com, contact us at info@dcdcDance.com or give us a call at 301-840-8400 for a current schedule.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
There are several on different levels...probably that my students are "phenomenal dancers and great kids"...our Annual Dance Concerts are as "good as a Broadway show" but, in the long run, it would have to be hearing from a former student about the "great memories" they have of their dancing days or the "positive effect you had on my life"...which is proven year after year when a Mom, who actually grew up at DCDC, brings in her little one to start classes with us...and so the cycle begins again!
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
“One hundred years from now it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much I had in my bank nor what my clothes looked like.
One hundred years from now it will not matter what kind of school I attended, what kind of typewriter I used, how large or small my church, but the world may be ...a little better because...I was important in the life of a child." ― Forest Whitcraft
