Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Capital Quilts celebrates its 20th anniversary on May 1, 2015! What began as a storefront with a few dozen bolts of fabric is now a shop with 18 employees and over 6000 bolts of fabric. I purchased the shop on April 1, 2012.
What is your primary product or service?
As a quilt shop, we sell everything you need to make a quilt: fabric, books and patterns, thread, batting, notions, Janome sewing machines, Handi Quilter quilting machines, and basic sewing supplies, such as rulers, pins, marking tools, and more. We also carry other products suitable to other sewing projects, such as embroidery thread, Dill buttons, Velcro, cording, storage bins, and interfacings. We offer classes, in-store events such as book signings and sewing challenges, and a place for groups to meet.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I made my first quilt when my youngest child was in fifth grade. Each classroom was asked to have the children make a quilt to sell at auction to raise funds for the school. I got the children started on designing their blocks, then went home and started reading about how to make a quilt! Eventually the quilt top got made and one of the other moms quilted and helped me bind it. This same mom introduced me to Capital Quilts, where I took some classes and later joined the staff. I worked at the shop for six years before I purchased it upon the retirement of the original owners. Oh, and yes, the school quilt did very well at auction, raising $2400 for the school!
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We take pride in our commitment to excellent customer service. We strive to be friendly, patient, and helpful to all our customers. We aren't perfect, but we are persistent! We also reach out to the greater community through our Capital Quilts Cares program. We hold free events to make quilts for cancer patients, women in shelters, and children in military families whose parent or parents have been posted overseas; placemats for seniors; pet beds for local shelters; blankets and dolls for children; Quilts of Valor for service men and women; heart-shaped pillows for those who have had thoracic surgery; pillowcases for children with cancer; and isolette covers for premies. We also accept projects that have been finished at home and see that they are delivered to the appropriate charity.

We have one location and yes, we are planning an expansion, both in our brick-and-mortar shop and online. Stay tuned!
